The purpose of this classification is to protect life and property, to respond to the needs of the general public, to deter criminal activity within the community, to enforce all city statutes, ordinances and the laws and regulations of the state, and to perform investigations, special details, and specific assignments within an assigned division.

Must possess a high school diploma or GED and be at least 20 years of age to apply; 21 years of age at time of academy graduation.  A valid Alabama driver’s license and U.S. citizenship are required, as well as the ability to pass and maintain current Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training (A.P.O.S.T.) certification requirements as a law enforcement officer.  Passing and retaining current status with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and qualifying to operate a firearm are also required.  May require additional certification as an Intoxilyzer 5000 Operator.  Employment contingencies include successful pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background investigation.  Disqualifying factors may include, but are not limited to felony/moral turpitude convictions.  **Please be advised that effective July 1, 2017, APOST requirements will include completion of  a Basic Abilities Test (BAT) applying to any applicant for certification to the academy that has not already attained an Associate’s Degree or higher.  This test is administered at the applicants’ expense at a cost of $45.00.  The BAT will be scheduled as a group for applicants meeting these qualifications after completion of the Physical Agility Testing,**
