Calhoun Celebrates Future Workforce at 5th Annual Technical Career Signing Day

Today, Calhoun Community College celebrated the next generation of skilled workers today during its 5th Annual Technical Career Signing Day, held at the college’s Advanced Technology Center on the Decatur campus.

Hosted in partnership with the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3), the event recognized high school students from across North Alabama as they signed letters of intent to begin their technical education and careers with one of Calhoun’s industry partners.

“This event is a powerful moment for our students and their families as they take the next step toward building meaningful careers,” said Kassie Mathis, Vice President of Student Services at Calhoun Community College. “We are committed to supporting them every step of the way, from enrollment to employment, as they pursue their goals.”

Much like traditional athletic signing days, students took the stage to sign their letters of intent and were recognized by name, program of study, and future employer. Family members, educators, industry representatives, and community supporters gathered to celebrate the students as they committed to high-demand career paths in areas such as advanced manufacturing, automotive technology, HVAC, welding, and other technical fields.

“We are incredibly proud of these students and the direction they are choosing for their futures,” said Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun President. “They are entering fields that not only support our local economy but also provide them with stability, purpose, and opportunity.”

The annual event highlights the growing demand for skilled workers across North Alabama and reinforces the important role technical education plays in meeting workforce needs.

“Our academic programs are designed to align directly with industry needs, ensuring students are gaining the skills that employers are actively seeking,” said Wes Rakestraw, Vice President of Academics at Calhoun Community College. “This partnership between education and industry creates a clear pathway to success for our students and strengthens the workforce across our region.”

Students participating in the signing day will continue their education at Calhoun while working toward Associate of Applied Science degrees and gaining valuable experience with local employers.
Industry partners were also on hand to welcome students into their organizations and celebrate the important role they will play in the future workforce.

Calhoun’s Technical Career Signing Day continues to grow each year as more students recognize the value of technical education and the rewarding career opportunities available through skilled trades and workforce training programs.
