Calhoun Community College Announces Dual Enrollment Scholarship Opportunities for High School Students in Visual Arts Program

Calhoun Community College is pleased to announce that its Visual Arts program has been approved for the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Dual Enrollment scholarship funding. This exciting opportunity allows high school students in Madison, Morgan, Limestone, and Lawrence counties to enroll in Visual Arts courses and begin earning college credits while still in high school.

The newly funded Visual Arts courses offer students a unique chance to explore their creative potential and gain practical skills that can be applied to future careers in areas such as graphic design, animation, and multimedia production. The program includes courses in Typography, Digital Illustration, Advanced Computer Graphics, Digital Design, and Advanced Digital Design, all of which are part of Calhoun’s Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree and certificate programs in Visual Communications.
Located at the Alabama Center for the Arts (ACA) in downtown Decatur, Calhoun’s Visual Arts program emphasizes the integration of artistic skills with current technologies, preparing students for a range of roles in today’s dynamic and technology-driven workforce.

Calhoun President, Dr. Jimmy Hodges, expressed the college’s enthusiasm for this new opportunity. “Dual enrollment has proven to be a valuable pathway for students to get a head start on their college education while exploring fields that interest them. We’re excited to now offer Visual Arts as one of our dual enrollment options, and we hope students across our region will take full advantage of the scholarship funding available to them.”

Eligibility and Application Details: High school students interested in dual enrollment must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Written approval from their high school or home school counselor or administrator
  • Maintain a grade of C or higher in all dual enrollment courses to remain eligible for future classes
Calhoun’s Dual Enrollment scholarships provide funding for two classes per student, per semester, covering tuition and textbooks for technical courses like Visual Arts, and tuition for academic courses (textbooks for academic classes remain the student’s responsibility).
Spring 2024 Semester Enrollment: The spring academic term begins on January 8, 2024, and interested students should follow their respective high school’s dual enrollment procedures to apply. Enrollment deadlines are approaching, and students are encouraged to contact their school counselors to get started.

This announcement follows Calhoun’s continued commitment to expanding educational opportunities that prepare students for success, both academically and professionally. The ACA, a collaborative partnership between Calhoun Community College and Athens State University, serves as a vibrant learning environment where students can pursue artistic and technical education.
