Calhoun's Social Work Program Continues to Grow as UNA Joins Transfer Partnership List
Today, Calhoun Community College expanded opportunities for future social workers by officially signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of North Alabama, creating a new transfer pathway for students pursuing careers in social work.
According to Florence Doughty, Calhoun’s Social Work Instructor and Social Services Coordinator, the agreement allows students who graduate from Calhoun in good academic standing, with at least 30 transferable credit hours or completion of an associate degree, to receive guaranteed admission to UNA, provided all program requirements are met to earn a Bachelor of Social Work degree.
“Social work is rooted in service, advocacy, and compassion,” said Dr. Donna Estill, Calhoun’s Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. “This agreement gives our students a clear and purposeful pathway to continue their education while building the skills needed to support individuals, families, and communities in meaningful ways.”
The MOU outlines a strong support system between both institutions, including dedicated transfer advising, recruitment support, and ongoing academic guidance. Students in the program will benefit from pre-transfer advising as well as a reverse transfer option, allowing them to earn their associate degree from Calhoun after transferring to UNA, provided all requirements are completed.
“This agreement is about opening doors wider and moving students forward,” said Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun President. “It provides real momentum, seamless pathways, stronger support, and the confidence to keep going. For those called to social work and service, it removes barriers and helps turn their goals into action, preparing them for careers that truly make a difference.”
Calhoun first announced its Social Work program last summer, establishing transfer agreements with Alabama A&M University and The University of Alabama. The addition of UNA marks another exciting step forward, providing students with even more opportunities to pursue a bachelor’s degree and advance toward impactful careers that serve individuals and communities across all stages of life.
This newly formed partnership reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to expanding educational access, strengthening the workforce across North Alabama, and building on the long-standing relationship between Calhoun and UNA.
“Our students come to Calhoun because they want to make a difference,” said Doughty. “This new opportunity helps them take the next step in their social work education with confidence, clarity, and purpose.”
