Mental Health Worker

HOURS: Full Time - 40 Hours Weekly - As Assigned
SUPERVISOR: Residential Coordinator

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Carry out duties specific to assigned work shift; assist clients in meal preparation during shift;
supervise clients in household tasks and to teach clients component skills associated with
routine household tasks; ensure that clients adhere to household rules; transport group home
clients; arrange for community outings for clients; assist Home Coordinator in providing
instruction over a variety of socialization skills; lead activities; provide supportive guidance;
monitor medications.
• Client Care. (Examples of tasks: assist clients when necessary in personal hygiene. Tasks may
include but are not limited to assistance with Depends or adult undergarments, bathing, hair
care, getting dressed, or removing clothing.)
• Meet productivity requirements of the program as set by the Residential Coordinator and/or
Residential Specialist.
• Check and maintain current Essential Learning training updates. View email per policy
requirements.
• Adherence to provider care standards; will ensure that all standards of care are maintained on
a consistent basis; will provide accurate and timely documentation in accordance with
established standards.
• Participate in team effort of the Residential Division (Examples of tasks: staff cases with other
Division members within the catchment area when necessary).
• Housekeeping (Examples of tasks: Perform cleaning of group home in conjunction with
residents and other group home staff; monitor client assigned tasks; schedule periodic
thorough cleaning projects; identify repair needs).
CRITICAL TASKS: Ensure client safety.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:
• Education: Education: High School completion or equivalent
• Experience: Some mental health related experience
MINIMUM EXPECTATIONS:
• Ability to relate well to clients, a multi-disciplinary staff, and the community, ability to
work with a team. Must demonstrate and continue to show merit.
• Maintain a current driver’s license valid in Alabama and a good driving record. The
license shall be appropriate for the type of vehicle operated by the driver.
• TB screening prior to initiation of duties. Annual screening shall occur only if there has
been known exposure or evidence of ongoing TB transmission.
• Must be able to work in a cooperative manner with co-workers, supervisors, and other
staff in the company.
• Performs other related duties as required. (Related duties as required are duties which
may not be specifically listed in the duties and responsibilities description, but are
within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with
the employee’s class of work.)
• Must be able to follow company policies and procedures.
• Must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and
tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to
communicate with supervisors, clients, vendors and any other person or organization
with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and project goals.
• Must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but
not limited to, attendance standards, work deadlines, and beginning and ending
assignments on time.
TRAINING:
• Received initial and at least annual training related to the special needs of the
population served.
• Professionally accepted management of aggressive/assaultive behavior and crisis
intervention techniques: The training must have been within the past 2 years, and the
training must have been conducted prior to working alone with consumers.
• Infection control: Staff shall be trained prior to working with consumers and annually
thereafter. Train consumers in infection control training at the time of admission and
annually thereafter.
• Have current certification for First Aid and CPR from an authorized certifying agency.
Staff are trained prior to working alone with consumers.
• Initial training on the following topics:
? Diagnostic categories.
? Classes of psychotropic medications.
? Recovery orientation.
? Interaction with consumers and families.
• Abuse and neglect and all state laws pertaining to abuse and neglect including reporting
required by the Department of Human Resources. Training is required prior to working
alone with consumers and on an annual basis.
• Must complete and receive a Medication Assistant Certification (MAC): A MAC worker
must undergo twenty-four hours of training by the medication assistance supervising
nurse (MAS). The first twelve hours (Level 1) is classroom education and the second
twelve hours is practical training (Level 2). A MAS RN or MAS LPN at the facility must
perform the education and certify the individual as capable of being a MAC worker. A
90% passing score is required on the MAC Training test to become a MAC Worker.
Performance will be reviewed and evaluated every six months and annually a four hour
training must be completed.
